What to Do if Your Basement Floods

Since a plumbing failure can cause your basement to flood when you least expect it, it can be difficult to know how to react. Knowing the steps to take can make everything a little bit easier and may mitigate some of the damage.

Shut off any failed plumbing

The first thing to do is cut the water to any systems or appliances that are leaking. This may involve shutting off your home’s water main.

Note: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO WALK THROUGH YOUR WET BASEMENT. Even if the water is only a few inches deep, you never know if it is electrified or if contains dangerous bacteria or viruses.

Call Peninsula as soon as possible

The longer you wait to call us, the more damage your home could sustain. It only takes about 48 hours for mold to start growing, so call us right away! We will pump out the water, dry your home, and make sure any mold and rot are controlled.

Once the immediate problems are solved, we will move on to finding the source of the flood taking care of it as quickly as possible.

Rescue your Things

While you might be able to get to a few things, remember—walking through water in your basement can be extremely dangerous and it’s best to wait until you’ve called us and gotten the go-ahead.

If you have photos, electronics, or other irreplaceable items that have been damaged by water, don’t worry too much—there are many companies out there who specialize in restoring valuables that have been damaged.

Remember too that while the basement is drying, it will likely be very humid for a few days. As a result, you may want to move personal items like photos, documents, and fabrics out even if they don’t look like they’ve been damaged.

Notify your insurance company

If you have flood insurance, now is a good time to call your insurance company. An agent will be able to talk to you about your claim options and can advise you on what to do should you need to meet with other contractors.

Some insurance companies will offer protection from flooding, and some will not do so. Additionally, it is important to note that some companies offer coverage for failing plumbing and not floods that come from groundwater flooding.

Even if the flood you see today is small, or you don’t feel that a call to your insurance company is necessary, you may want to make a mental note on exactly what kinds of coverage you have, should a larger flood occur later on.
